Every year, around 9,70,000 students appear for UPSC Civil Services Examination India’s toughest exam. The irony is, out of the total only 800-900 candidates gets selected after the Interview and are finally recruited.

The process is not so simple.
Choosing Civil Services as a career in itself is a big decision followed by making a mindset of “sacrificing” the easy fun-life and moving out of your comfort zone. To showcase the struggle faced by every UPSC aspirant, a web series titled “ASPIRANTS” was recently released on Youtube by The Viral Fever. It has very smoothly captured all the emotions, challenges, dilemmas and struggles faced by every candidate preparing for the UPSC exams in their daily life.
A few of them are as follows:
1. Lack of Guidance: Many students do not get the much-required guidance from the right people at the right time. This leads to poor choices and decisions made by them while preparing and studying. They either study too much or miss out on the most important concepts. Thus, there is always a need for mentorship and counselling for aspirants to study accordingly.

 2. Understanding the Exam pattern: Many students fail to understand the need for the examination and the pattern followed by UPSC. Many tend to get confused when a choice needs to be made between static syllabus and current affairs. Students must understand all the three stages of the exam, which includes: Prelims (qualifying in nature), Mains (Answer Writing) and Interview. These three phases have different marks criteria for qualifying them. This involves consistency, patience, hard work and dedication. Only then the willing candidates can sail through it.
3. Understanding of the syllabus: Aspirants fail to understand the vast diversity of the UPSC CSE syllabus. A general understanding of the basic concepts, their application in the real society followed by current events happening in the surroundings should be well-known to them. Balance has to be maintained by dedicating one to two hours daily to current affairs and spending the rest of the time on static subjects and the optional.
4. Time Management: Many candidates fail miserably by wasting their time watching sports or binge-watching content on OTT or social platforms, wandering around and spending time leisurely. One needs to understand that Time-Management is the key to clearing the exam with flying colours. Setting up daily goals and small targets is a must. Continuous revision and practising mock papers are the keys to learning and understanding.
5. Self-Study or Coaching: There exists confusion among candidates about whether to opt for self-study or from a coaching Institute. One thing that should always be remembered here is, though, the coaching centres can guide you and help you in a better understanding of the concepts, but only your hard work and dedication will help you towards a bright future.

6. Study Material: The service commission do not provide a detailed syllabus. Only NCERTs are recommended with continuous revisions. Students, here too, fail to make a disciplined choice, and rather than taking proper notes they just try to fill gaps in their study. As a result, they end up buying anything and everything available in the market.
7. Financial and Mental Stress: Sitting and studying for hours becomes a tedious task for many students, those working in offices or running a business. The vastness of the subject and the finances required for buying the basic study material, coaching fees, newspaper, etc. adds to the mental and financial stress faced by the candidates.
The above-mentioned challenges are normal for every aspirant preparing for the Civil Services Examination. However, pursuing the right and positive approach with commitment, proper management of time and consistency can help you to sail through the exam. Your true determination should be like the shining sun which can sometimes be blocked by a big mountain (read- challenge), but, always appears victorious again.
